As it was told to me, the thunder beings who lived close to the Earth's surface could and did harm the people at times. There are two classes of the thunder beings: those who live close to the Earth, and the holiest and most powerful of the thunder beings who live in the land of the west beyond the Mississippi River (Asagaya Gigaei; Thunder Beings of the West), and visit the people to bring the rains and blessings from the South. There were four Thunder Beings from the West a male and female greater spirit, the Red Man and Red Woman, and their two sons. Asgaya Gigagei or the Red Man of Lightning (usually just called the Red Man) is very powerful and is so called because he is red in color and controls lightning. The thunder beings are some of the most powerful of the servants of the Great Spirit, and are revered in the first dance of the Green Corn Ceremony held each year, as they brought the rains for a successful corn crop. They are evoked in ceremonies to cure the ill. He can give strong medicine to those who help him. One day when he came to the earth atop a ridge an Uktena was coiled about him and choking him to death when a hunter helped him escape. He gave the hunter a medicine bag with a burnt scale from the Uktena that guaranteed that he would always find game. Though he always had to hang it outside and it could make people deathly sick unless they were properly cared for.

What does your culture say about cedar trees, swallows, and the Thunder Beings?  In the Lakhota culture, cedar trees and their wood are identified with the Thunder Beings, as is the swallow because it flies and darts ahead the approaching storms.  Nice work, my friend.
